State Prosecutors Reveal Alleged Reasons In Conservative Activist Shooting
Proof submitted from local lawyers this week illuminated what authorities suspect drove Tyler Robinson to allegedly kill conservative provocateur Charlie Kirk.
Obtained Messages Suggest Political Motive
In digital communications reproduced by prosecutors, Robinson is described saying to his roommate—described as undergoing a gender transition—that he had enough of Kirk’s “hatred”.
“Some hate cannot be negotiated out,” Robinson allegedly stated.
The state claim that Robinson’s mother told authorities her son had recently become increasingly ideological and had started shifting to the left, embracing LGBTQ+ rights.
Household Conflict and Political Differences
His new outlook reportedly led to disagreements between relatives, especially between Robinson and his father, who maintained very different beliefs.
Earlier media reporting noted that Robinson’s parents were active GOP voters who supported Donald Trump in the last election.
Court documents referenced a message in which Robinson described his father as “a strong Trump supporter”.
Preparation and Execution of the Shooting
According to the state, Robinson commented on Kirk’s appearance at UVU, describing it as a “poor choice of location”.
His mother told investigators that Robinson had accused Kirk of “promoting intolerance”.
Following the shooting, Robinson’s parents reportedly recognized their son in a security image released in the news.
The suspect’s dad, a firearms owner, suspected the weapon used in the shooting matched one he had given to his son.
Admission and Arrest
In a conversation with his father, Tyler Robinson allegedly admitted to the murder, stating there was “excessive hatred” and that Kirk “promoted division”.
Robinson later surrendered to authorities with the assistance of a family friend who was a local law enforcement official.
Evidence and Charges
The state pointed to DNA evidence found on the rifle abandoned near the university, as well as messages to his partner, as key evidence linking Robinson to the crime.
Markings on shells discovered near the scene included words such as “anti-fascist slogans” and “a resistance song lyric”.
But the accused allegedly dismissed these markings in a text as “fuckin … mostly a big meme”.
Partner’s Question and Reply
In one texts, the roommate asked Robinson, “You weren’t the one who did it right?”
Robinson—who referred to his partner his “dear”—allegedly responded, “I am, I’m sorry.”
Additionally, he apologized for “involving” the roommate and wrote that he had wanted to keep the truth till he died of old age.
Judicial Actions and Possible Sentence
Robinson is charged with capital murder, and the state announced they will pursue the death penalty if he is found guilty.
One aggravating factor mentioned was that Robinson targeted Kirk due to his political expression.
Jeff Gray, chief state prosecutor in the county, stated that the choice to pursue the death penalty was made without external influence and based solely on the evidence and nature of the offense.
