Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, including a substantial array of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
