Gas Detonation Takes 3 Police Officers During Property Removal Operation in Northern Italy

A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews approached the property close to the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the site and a third person who fled after the explosion was located not long after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location revealed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander told news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also located at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He thought the blast had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he revealed personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told local news, adding that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
