Former FBI Head James Comey Files Innocent Plea to Allegations of Falsehoods Lawmakers

James Comey court appearance
Comey has stated his innocence about the charges

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's lawyer submitted the answer on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney announced he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for various reasons including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative told the court they intended to file multiple legal requests to dismiss the case before a trial, claiming the legal action was vindictive and that a government lawyer was improperly assigned to assume control of the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional opponent - the New York official - was unable to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration dismissed.

After listening to the judge recite his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Historical Information

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was fired about a few months into the former president's first term as president. At the moment, he was leading an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, the director triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Clinton were never brought, causing disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys allege James Comey provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he deceived the legislative body by saying he had not authorized someone at the agency to release to news outlets data about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, hinder and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media Mr Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"My family and I have understood for a long time that there are costs to opposing Donald Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after Trump shared on online platforms demanding his attorney general, Pam Bondi, prosecute James Comey and others.
